BENAH LOVES | Rdio

What is an office without music? Since we love being able to press play and let someone else do all the choosing we got behind Grooveshark and other online radio stations pretty quickly. But we've found a new musical love (we can be fickle like that!), and its name is Rdio. We love that you can play your music across a variety of different platforms, we love the massive back catalogue, we love the awesome playlists and we love discovering new tunes. If you're struggling to find music to play give Rdio a go, we're addicted!

BENAH LOVES | Alice Cavanagh

We've long admired Alice Cavanagh - Editor of Oyster, expat Parisienne and freelancer writer - and we love her candid, expressive writing voice. We didn't even know that she had a blog (and what a blog!) until we found her profile on Instagram and we are enchanted. Sometimes it's easy to get overwhelmed by imagery, there are so many sites around whose sole purpose it is to bombard you with pretty pictures. It's literally a relief to find sites out there that are focussed on content and information and perspective and words. We've loved reading through Cavanagh's portfolio of interviews and reviews (our favourites were the one with the adorably French Lea Seydoux and her musings on the recent Chanel Couture show at Versailles).

We also believe in writing what you know. It's a tried-and-tested cliche, but in matters of art what you know plays the most important role. Is it possible to write about anything else? You can use your imagination to a certain extent but there are some things that you just know. And it's these things that impact the most upon your ability to create. It was on her blog that we stumbled across Cavanagh's article for Vogue, one of our favourite opinion pieces, about her ill-fated first move overseas. It struck a chord with us when we first read it because of its recognition of how important making mistakes and following through is, especially when you are young. We also believe this, and we think all of that messy, life-stuff makes Cavanagh such a great writer. Check out her site, Write About What You Know, if you're interested in having a poke around some excellent interviews with musicians, artists and actresses, film reviews, fashion-y bits and pieces and more. You won't regret it!

THIS IS MY CITY | Dee's Sydney

Sydney is our home, and even though it can be flashy and silly and so expensive at times, we love it, because it's just so beautiful. Sydney may be our city, but it's Dee's city too. Dee is the fashion editor of Shop Til You Drop, and the kind of Sydney girl who always light ups the room with a big smile. She lives by the beach, like all Sydney girls ought to if they possibly can, and she's sharing some of her favourite places in our city here. This is Sydney, by Dee.

 Sydney Harbour Bridge - source

one. Best thing about your city? Working in the city but living by the beach.

two. Worst thing about your city? Everything is so expensive.

three. Favourite secret spot? Down south in the National Park where you can whale watch from the cliff tops and gaze at the ocean while the big southerlies blow in. I grew up around here so visits are always accompanied by a sense of nostalgia. The Cape Solander cliffs are especially magical.

Bondi to Bronte walk - source

four. Favourite everyone-knows-it-but-it's-still-good spot? The Bondi to Bronte coastal walk is pretty special. No matter how many times I do it I’m always amazed at how beautiful the view is. Or even better is walking it in the other direction and finishing up at North Bondi during sunset for drinks and aranchini at NBI

five. What is your newest discovery in your city? What about somewhere you've been going since forever but can't quite give up? I’ve recently discovered the Farmers Markets and like to spending Saturday morning there just wandering around, drinking coffee, buying fresh flowers and stocking up on fruit and veggies for the week. I head to Bondi as it’s closest to me but Eveleigh and Kings Cross are also great. An old favourite is the Four In Hand in Paddington, which I discovered years ago when living right across the road. The steak and fries on the bar menu are insanely good and combined with good company and a cider make for the perfect lazy Sunday afternoon.

 Bang Bang cafe - source

six. Where is the best place for.... morning coffee? meal with friends? romantic rendez-vous? late night drink? even later-night boogie? My favourite morning coffees are those that accompany poached eggs and crispy pancetta during a relaxed weekend breakfast at Bang Bang in Surry Hills. For a meal with friends, you can’t beat a BYO bottle of red and as much pasta and pizza as you can eat (usually with change from a $20) at Bar Reggio in Darlinghurst or Phamish around the corner is great too. I think that Sydney is such a picturesque city that a picnic is the perfect romantic rendezvous - Sydney Picnic Co can whip something up if there’s no time to DIY and the view from the Botanic Gardens is lovely. I always enjoy a nightcap at Eau-De-Vie in Darlinghurst. And finally, for one last boogie and the opportunity to embarrass yourself amongst friends in what will surely become a night to remember, you must hire a room at Ding Dong Dang karaoke bar on Randle St in Surry Hills. It's always very fun and funny!

seven. Where are the city's style spots? Where is the best shopping? You're bound to find someone worthy of a street style snap in either Surry Hills, Paddington or Bondi. For shopping, the Corner Shop always has something that I will fall in love with. I usually drop into the Strand Arcade store as it is close to my office. Lover, also a favourite, have recently opened their first boutique in there too which means another beautiful store to visit. Otherwise Glenmore Road in Paddington is always great for checking out all your favourite Australian designers (plus Acne!).

eight. What is something you can get/read/experience/eat that you can only do in your city? See something interesting and inspiring at the MCA down at The Rocks and then jump on the ferry and head across the harbour to Taronga Zoo. Those giraffes have the best view of the city!

Giraffes at Taronga zoo - source

nine. You can tell a lot about a city from their airport. Describe yours. All I seem to be able to find there are cheesy souvenir shops, newsagencies, McDonalds and Duty Free stores. Maybe it’s like Sydney in that there are lots of cool places to eat and fun things to do but you need to be with someone in the know to show you around?

ten. How would you describe your city to someone who has never been there before? It’s fun - whether you choose to be busy and do lots or just lie on the beach and do nothing at all, you’re sure to have a good time.

THIS IS MY CITY | Tiffany's Berlin

There's something going on in Berlin. Everyone is talking about it, everyone is moving there, everyone is saying that it's going to be the "next big thing". And we really want to go there! Maybe it's because we spend a lot of time trawling through the archives of Freunde von Freunden looking all those amazing apartments with 1960s furniture (what is it about Berlin?). We asked one of our good friend Tiff, who was the first person to grab us by the shoulders and tell us that we HAVE to go Berlin, to share some of her favourite places. This is Berlin - by Tiffany.

street art

one. Best thing about Berlin? The street art. Everywhere you go. From a little something cute on a lamp post to 30 story high rise building covered with one piece.

two. Worst thing about Berlin? I cant say the worst THING about Berlin but I will say it was there that is the last time I ever went/will go to a zoo. It seemed like a fun idea at the time but i'll never shake the memory of a beautiful tiger pacing his tiny concrete cell with metal bars non-stop roaring in distress. It was so horrible.

three. Favourite secret spot? The Kolle 37 adventure playground. A friend took us there at night and it was so surreal. It was a TRUE adventure. You can climb everything. I hear it's been knocked down since I was there last - it was quite old and unsafe.

adventure playground - playground architecture

four. Favourite everyone-knows-it-but-it's-still-good spot? The flea markets in Prenzlauer Berg. just incredible, what finds to be found. A must go for anyone with an eye for treasure. Oh and in the afternoon its outdoor karaoke!

five. What is your newest discovery in Berlin? What about somewhere you've been going since forever but can't quite give up? hmmm its actually a cookie. with seeds and sultanas and oatmeal and yummy things. Definitely not as healthy as it sounds. buttery too... And I'll always go back to Cafe Morgenrot. Its a home made vegan and vegetarian cafe which works on a serve yourself "pay what can can" system. Its true East Berlin vibe to me. Full of all sorts- lots of punks.. They hold cultural and politcal discussions (I dont speak German so have never attended) but more than anything it's just a great cosy/casual vibe, healthy food and a great people watching spot.

six. Where is the best place for.... morning coffee? meal with friends? romantic rendez-vous? late night drink? even later-night boogie? Villa orange (also doubles as an equally as great late afternoon red wine spot). They have a goose-lamp there im obsessed with. Charming down to the finest details including so oh so fabulous bathroom. Mis-matched couches, crockery and flower displays. lace curtains but still the perfect amount of cosy dingeyness... probably because you can still smoke inside! -Usually with friends we eat at a bar or pub. The quality is pretty good. - I cant say I went anywhere specifically romantic but Berlin is where my boyfriend and I fell in love. It's in the air I suppose! Casseiopeia- another crazy surreal space- a renovated train repair ground. lots of amazing graffiti. skate park/treehouses/two storey club/ live music and...a rock climbing wall... attitude free chill or silliness to get your night started. And Rosi's- accessed through a hole in the wall best after 1am. Late night boogie indeed.

Humana - source

seven. Where are Berlin's style spots? Where is the best shopping? Humana. A 6 story vintage castle! It's so huge. This spot requires some time and commitment. well worth it. Berlin also has lots of mixed label boutiques showing interesting local designers. Some are a bit out there for me but its nice to see what young people are doing in that culture.

eight. What is something you can get/read/experience/eat that you can only do in Berlin? Ok again-food- pommes frites! roadside wagon fries with mayo and ketchup. a match made in pot-belly heaven. Also in East Berlin I love seeing the groups of young punks with dogs milling around train stations. Its so far from anything you'd see here. The youth culture is so strong its just fascinating!

nine. You can tell a lot about a city from their airport. Describe Berlin's. Any airport is great for me no matter where. its just that holiday vibe. even if you've been sitting around for hours in plastic chair hell- its still fun! When you see the words Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt how could you not be loving it?

ten. How would you describe Berlin to someone who has never been there before? the coolest.

THIS IS MY CITY | Dee's New York

New York. New York, New York. Concrete jungle where dreams are made. The city of Carrie Bradshaw and Woody Allen, the city of Broadway and the Met and the Knicks and Law and Order. Style city, sporting city, artistic city, literary city, cinematic city, musical city. It has it all, really. And who better to write an insider's guide but our friend Dee, recently relocated to the big smoke.

photo by Dee, who says of the image: "Ok so I got sent this image last night which is pretty good. It's fleet week in NYC and obviously I'm the first  to steal some form of hat attire from someone."

one. Best thing about New York? Stoop parties and rooftops.

two. Worst thing about New York? Street garbage and rats

three. Favourite secret spot? Any speak easy bar in the city, they're hidden all over.

four. Favourite everyone-knows-it-but-it's-still-good spot? Lovely Day, it's on Elizabeth Street in Nolita. I'm seriously obsessed with the food there. The vibe is chilled, your guaranteed to run into a bunch of rad people you know. If you want some good food and atmosphere, anyone coming to new york should try it. The ginger chicken and the flour less chocolate cake are my favorites!

Lovely Day - source

five. What is your newest discovery in New York? What about somewhere you've been going since forever but can't quite give up? There's a theater a couple blocks from my apartment, they play midnight films a couple times a month. I'm addicted to going. The last movie I watched was Spike Lee's 'Do the Right Thing' I love being able to do that in the middle of the night. I have a weekend activity with a friend of mine that I don't think I'll be able to give up any time soon. We call it 'bench time'. There's a cupcake shop on the corner of Prince & Mott . We sit on the benches outside and just people watch. We literally sit there for hours. Factoring in 'bench time' is a weekend must. We drink tea, talk about nothing and laugh. Last week we saw Jude Law & his kids, I don't think I'll be able to give that up any time soon.

six. Where is the best place for.... morning coffee? meal with friends? romantic rendez-vous? late night drink? even later-night boogie? I'm a big coffee drinker so I've narrowed it down to a few good spots (NYC doesn't have great coffee) my inside scoop would be Ground Support (W Broadway & Spring, Soho), Saturdays (Crosby Street, Soho), and Smile To Go (Howard Street, Soho) I'm obsessing over this vegan thai place called Wild Ginger (Broome St, Nolita) I eat there a lot with friends. Its a cool little spot, every time I eat in there they are always playing Cat Power. Romantic rendez-vous would be Bianca, a little italian restaurant on Bleecker. Its low lit, cheap but delicious food, like nona is cooking in the kitchen. Late night drink for me is always ending up somewhere fun, the last late night drink i had i ended up at The Box (Chrystie Street), somewhere everyone should go to when they come to New York. An even later night boogie would be Bedlam (East Village) I go there with my gay boyfie..

seven. Where are New Yorks style spots? Where is the best shopping? Williamsburg is a huge style spot! I like to call it babetown. Your guaranteed to find a cute hipster in BK skating through the streets rocking a cap and a coffee. I like to do all my shopping in one spot. So I would say Soho, plus some of my favorite designers have stores down there, Rag & Bone, Alexander Wang, Isabel Marant, Helmut Lang, Acne is just opening up in a bigger location (so excited), plus Opening Ceremony is there too! Literally all a few blocks away from each other

eight. What is something you can get/read/experience/eat that you can only do in New York? Be prepared to write cheques, get given cheques, pay in cheques, cheques cheques cheques, yes were living in the 80s! You've also gotta experience a Yankee game, buy a Derek Jeter jersey, a hot dog, sit in the bleachers and waste your day watching a game in the sun. And street meat, you can't come to New York and not try at least one 99c hot dog from the street meat guy on your corner.

nine. You can tell a lot about a city from their airport. Describe yours. Well I can't say I know much about it really, I arrived in New York, had never been here before.. and haven't left since.

ten. How would you describe your city to someone who has never been there before? Grimy, zing, KAPOW!

New York, New York - capture the castle

THINGS WE LOVE IN | June

Winter! Winter is something we love in June! Winter is coming, and winter is here, and we love winter, and so we were so happy to have our good friend Natalie (who has previously put together a travel post for us) curate our top ten this month. And it's full of wintery goodies, from burning candles to fun jumpsuits and warming winter drinks. Check it out below:

As the nights draw in, I relish getting home and lighting a candle. Currently, I have a Curio Noir one in Tobacco Night on my coffee table. It’s so beautiful, a delicate reimagining of Tiffany Jeans’ memory of a lingering pipe scent, sweet and mysterious all at the same time. It’s housed in beautiful brown glass and it’s perfect for winter, particularly when it’s accompanied by an evening whisky.

 two. Old Fashioneds

Speaking of whisky, I’ve been working on slowly amassing the perfect liquor cabinet. I bought a beautiful vintage oak trolley, and several cut glass decanters to keep my supplies in. We have all the ingredients for my favourite drink now, an Old Fashioned. Warming, spicy, sweet.

 three. Penny Sage jumpsuit

I’ve been wearing this Penny Sage jumpsuit to death. I buy one of her jumpsuits each season - they’re the best for going out and having fun in. Something about a jumpsuit just makes me feel a bit frisky. This one is my favourite so far, bright red silk with a dropped shoulder – so 1970s!

four. Viktor & Rolf Fairy Tales

the licentiate

One of my lovely clients gave me a copy of Viktor & Rolf Fairy Tales for my birthday. I have been reading a few pages each night before bed, savouring it – it’s mystical, magical and has resulted in several quite incredible dreams.

 five. Ballet Beautiful

vogue

I am not particularly good at exercising regularly – I do pilates once a week and love it, but the only other thing to pique my interest is Ballet Beautiful. Mostly because I can do it at home and it’s pretty. The creator, Mary Ellen Bowers trained Natalie Portman for Black Swan, it’s got to mean something, right?

 six. Winter reading

I’ve spent vast sums on magazines and books as it’s gotten colder. There’s nothing better than working your way through a stack of fresh paperbacks and getting absorbed in other worlds. On my list for the next few months are Joan Didion’s Play It As It Lays, Diane Keaton’s autobiography, Woody Allen’s very funny Without Feathers, Joyce Johnson’s Minor Characters and a collection of short stories by Mary Gaitskill called Bad Behaviour. Magazines of choice include Apartamento, UK Vogue, Lula, The Gentlewoman – the usual suspects.

 seven. A Chesterfield couch

design field notes

I dream of owning a beautiful leather Chesterfield couch, in the perfect state of disrepair. I recently missed out on one at auction – I’m still getting the hang of auctions, they’re a bit difficult. I hope I will find one this winter, I might need one for all that reading and whiskey.

 eight. Green juices

Every morning I have a green juice. Usually I make them myself, but when I am having a hectic week I order in a six-pack from PHD Cleanses. They are amazing, and I am close to giving up coffee as a result of drinking them regularly. Kale, delicious…

 nine. Dane Lovett

Dane Lovett

I am completely enamoured with the work of Dane Lovett. I read about his work on The Design Files and can’t wait ‘til I can one day afford a piece of his to hang on my walls. Aren’t they beautiful?

ten. Manger by Mimi Thorisson

Winter is a time I can indulge my stay-at-home qualities and domestic yearnings without a shred of guilt! Fire on, poring over cookbooks and creating elaborate, cosy feasts is how I like to spend the colder months. Much of my winter inspiration has been drawn from Manger, a website created by Mimi Thorisson, who lives with her family in Medoc, France. I made her steak with Bearnaise sauce and pommes frites recently, it was a total success.

THIS IS MY CITY | Katerina's Mexico

Mexico. Technically a country, but, as our guide's author Katerina argued - I'm going to answer them as if we are speaking about Mexico as a whole, rather than Mexico City... I think Aussies travelling here tend to do a few cities. And she's the Mexico expert so we let her run with it! Mexico is on the top of our must-visit list at the moment. How could it not be? Beautiful vistas, delicious food and the chance to immerse yourself in a different culture. This is Mexico, by Katerina.

All pictures by Katerina Bacchiaz

Convent of San Miguel de Allende at night

one. Best thing about Mexico? The people, the colours and the food. Mexico is full of vibrancy and surprises lie at every turn.

two. Worst thing about Mexico? The traffic! Mexicans are nuts on the roads.

three. Favourite secret spot? The Convent in San Miguel de Allende. It was built in 1745 but has now been converted into this amazing open space which houses art from established and emerging Mexican artists. A really interesting spot to spend an afternoon and I always think the best souvenir to take home is great art. If you have time you can also take a still life, sculpture or dance class.

four. Favourite everyone-knows-it-but-it's-still-good spot? Taxco. My favourite "pueblo magico". It's a tiny little city built up on hill in Guerrero which is famous for its silver. There are street vendors everywhere selling their wares and even Frida used to visit for her amazing jewelry.

Blue agave en Tequila

five. What is your newest discovery in your city? What about somewhere you've been going since forever but can't quite give up? Tequila! Recently went to there for the first time and fell so in love. A really beautiful cobble stoned town surrounded by blue agave as far as the eye can see. If you're feel adventurous you can take the "Tequila Express" for a day trip train ride accompanied by all you can drink tequila and a tour of a tequila factory. Totally cliche but super fun right?

six. Where is the best place for.... morning coffee? meal with friends? romantic rendez-vous? late night drink? even later-night boogie? At the beach, La Leche is incredible in Puerto Vallarta. For fun with friends I suggest Anita Li in Guadalajara. Super cool space and the best duck tacos and tamarind margaritas. Also El Rey is a local Mezcaleria that only serves Mezcal and beer (only if you're in for a big night!). In Mexico City the degustation menu at BIKO in Polanco is phenom and the rooftop pool deck and bar at Habita is definitely worth a visit.

seven. Where are your city's style spots? Where is the best shopping? In my eyes, markets are where it's at. "Tianguis", as they are called here, are in every city and always have the best handicrafts. At the moment I have a total soft spot for anything day of the dead related.

Skeletons and marzipan fruits at the markets

eight. What is something you can get/read/experience/eat that you can only do in Mexico? The taco stand! They are everywhere and open 24/7. Be it a midnight snack, a hangover cure or just lunch in general, you're bound to have an amazing meal there and meet a few locals.

nine. You can tell a lot about a city from their airport. Describe your city's. Unfortunately you're right....Mexico's airports have a lot to say about the place. Expect long queues, delays and dodgy taxi drivers. Take a moment to adjust to the Mexican pace and you'll be fine.

ten. How would you describe your city to someone who has never been there before? Chaos. Just take a deep breath and jump right in.
